on oct 20, 1958, an aircraft landing at yinchuan xihuayuan airport marked the opening of the lanzhou-yinchuan-baotou-beijing domestic air route, establishing ningxia's first air bridge.
with the rapid development of the local economy, yinchuan xihuayuan airport could hardly meet the increasingly growing aviation needs of ningxia. in march 1993, a proposal to build yinchuan hedong airport was approved.

on september 6, 1997, the newly built yinchuan hedong airport, which could accommodate the takeoff and landing of large passenger aircraft, was officially opened. the construction and operation of the airport fundamentally improved civil aviation transportation conditions in ningxia, enabling the open and rapid development of the region.

from 2005 to 2019, the airport was upgraded to become yinchuan hedong international airport, opening international routes, with an annual passenger throughput of over 10 million.
the resumption of yinchuan-hong kong route
in the nearly two decades since the opening of aviation ports in 2005, ningxia has been continuously committed to creating the "air silk road".
before 2010, yinchuan airport mainly operated trial and chartered flights. from 2010 to 2019, it successively opened routes to 19 international (regional) cities, such as incheon, south korea; bangkok, thailand; osaka, japan; nha trang, vietnam; and hong kong and taipei. seasonally, charter flights were opened from yinchuan to irkutsk, russia, pattaya, thailand, and other tourist destinations, initially establishing an "air corridor" for ningxia's opening to the outside world.
at present, yinchuan hedong international airport works with 26 airlines, serving 84 cities and following 109 routes.
